Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School is proud to partner with the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in hosting Holocaust Survivor and International Speaker Marion Blumenthal Lazan.
Mrs. Lazan will speak to the students and the community on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in MainStage Theater at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center about her harrowing experience during World War II and the Holocaust, as well as her inspirational mission of life thereafter.
Following Hitler’s rise to power, the Blumenthal family — Marion, her brother, Albert, and their parents, Albert and Ruth — were trapped in Nazi Germany. They managed eventually get to Holland, but soon thereafter it was occupied by the Nazis. For the next six and a half years, the Blumenthal’s were forced to live in refugee, transit and prison camps that included Westerbork in Holland and the notorious Bergen-Belson in Germany. Though they all survived the camps, Walter Blumenthal, Marion’s father, succumbed to typhus just after liberation.
It took three more years of struggle and waiting before Marion, Albert and their mother at last obtained the necessary papers and boarded ship for the United States. Their story is one of horror and hardship, but is also a story of courage, hope and the will to survive.
“Our students and staff are excited and humbled to have Mrs. Lazan coming to Lincoln Park. Being that this generation of students will be one of the last to hear first-hand testimony and accounts of all that the Holocaust was and is, we would like to invite everyone in the community to be a part of this special event,” said Tonya Sainovich, Lincoln Park middle school English teacher.
