[vc_row fullwidth=”yes”][vc_column][vc_column_text]Six students from Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School are being recognized for their winning entries as part of the fifth annual “Expressions of Courage” black-and-white portrait competition.
A public reception will take place Thursday, Nov. 9, from 5-7 p.m. at The Confluence, 214 East Washington St., in New Castle, PA. Awards will be presented to students who placed and merit winners at the reception. Admission is free.
Senior Emily Piacitelli’s photo, “Grape Minus G” won second place, and Junior Mike Selavko earned third place for his photo “Mindset.” Merit awards were given to the following four students: Isabelle Davison, senior, for “Normal Heart,” Robert Liggett, sophomore, for “Heart Over Hype,” Addy Diamond, senior, for “Eleanor,” and Paige McCrann, junior, for “Come Home Dad.”
Photographers of any age and skill level living within a 100-mile radius of New Castle were invited to apply for the fifth annual Expressions of Courage competition, which is sponsored by Arts and Education at the Hoyt Center for the Arts.
The competition celebrates the courage of individuals with a chronic illness or disability. Entries must depict an individual facing, caring for or treating a chronic illness or disability, and be accompanied by a short narrative describing the individual’s act of courage. Among the criteria judges look for in awarding prizes is the quality of the photograph and the ability of the image to convey a narrative.
Patti McLatchy, exhibition manager, said the portrait exhibition was originally inspired by the New Castle YMCA’s Salute to Courage dinner and likewise recognizes individuals who have overcome their fears to better themselves and or their community.
“It takes courage to recover from an accident, illness or injury; to live with a disability; to demonstrate acts of heroism; or to influence political, economic or social change for the common good in your school, neighborhood, or city,” McLatchy said.
Piacitelli, theater major, is the daughter of Lisa McClimans of West Middlesex.
Mike Selavko, media major, is the son of Kevin and Joanne Selavko of Beaver.
Isabelle Davison, musical theater major, is the daughter of Victoria and John Davison of Wexford.
Robert Liggett, media major, is the son of Marcia and Robert Liggett of West Bridgewater.
Addy Diamond, media major, is the daughter of Tracy and Brad Diamond of Beaver Falls.
Paige McCrann, media major, is the daughter of Betsy and Todd McCrann of Freedom.
The exhibition will remain on display through Jan. 4.
