MIDLAND, Pa. – Animal pictures drawn by students at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School won a number of top awards in a national online contest sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society, an animal advocacy and rescue organization based in Utah.
Jennifer Detchon of Wampum, a senior who graduated in June, took a first place. Josh Graef of Beaver won a second place, Ali Keirs of Aliquippa and Skyler Brimmeier of Rochester both won third places, while Steph Tujetsch of Center Township won a fourth place.
Honorable mentions went to Catherine DeEulio and Caitlin Wimer, both of New Castle, Dom DeNuzzio of Ambridge, Rachel Perri of Beaver and Ciera Hill of Center Township.
All are students in Judy Zumbrowski’s art class at Lincoln Park.
Medha Isaacs, humane education curriculum coordinator for Best Friends in Kanab, Utah, said the contest was staged to involve young people in animal welfare issues and to promote the organization’s youth website, Best Friends NextGen (www.bestfriendsnextgen.org).
“We have been working with Judy Zubrowski and have been delighted with the artwork that your students contributed to our contest that we held in July,” said Isaacs. “The art work was greatly appreciated by the thousands of visitors and volunteers who come regularly to Best Friends as well as the attendees of our Humane Education for Educators Workshop. We plan to hold the contest every year to help young people express their love and deep connection to pets.”
The organization currently has four campaigns relating to homeless pets, focusing on homelessness and retention, feral and stray cats, an end to “puppy mills,” and changing the negative image of pit bull dogs.
