Lincoln Park students take six top spots in math competition

March 7, 2017

Six Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School students were the top scorers during the AMC Math Competition.

The top spots in AMC 12: First place – Dan Mihelarakis of Coraopolis, second place – Elia Jablonsky of Joffre, Pa., and third place – Julianna Ronto of Washington, Pa. Top spots in AMC 10: First place – Morgan Faircloth of McKeesport, second place – Emma Brannen of Pittsburgh, and third place – Clara Pitkins of Valencia.

This year was Lincoln Park's first appearance in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA's) American Mathematics Competition. Sixteen students in grades 9-12 competed on Feb. 15 here at Lincoln Park against students from all over the United States.

Sarah Fucsko, math department chair, said this was Lincoln Park's second math competition of the year for the newly created Math Competition Club. The first competition this year was the Global Math Challenge, where students competed online against students from nations all over the globe.

Ten Lincoln Park students will compete March 21 against local school districts in the Pittsburgh region at the annual Penn State-Beaver Math Competition on the Monaca campus.

The MAA's American Mathematics Competitions program leads the nation in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers, according to the MMA's website.

The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students. The AMC 10 — for grades 10 and below — and AMC 12 — grades 12 and below — are both 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice exams in high school mathematics.

Through classroom resources and friendly competition, the program helps America's educators identify talent and foster a love of math. The MAA AMC program positively impacts the analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society.
