MIDLAND- The 2011 edition of the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School publication “pulp” has won a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, ranking it among the top nine printed high school student literary art magazines in the country.
‘Pulp’ has placed highly in state and national competition the past three years, including a Silver Crown Award in 2010 from the CSPA and a 2009 Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association.
Student editors for the 2011 “pulp” were Literary Managing Editor Julie McConnell, Media Managing Editor Nikki Kosior, Design Editors Levi McCandless and Elizabeth Seager, Art Editor Emily Petterson, Literary Editor Jane McConnell, Creative Nonfiction Editor Brittanie Terensky, Fiction Editor Brelyn Giffin, Poetry Editor Haley Burk, 3D Editor Ashanti D. Lee, Photography Editor Josh Graef, and Painting Editor Amy Foster.

About Gold Crown Awards from the CSPA
Entries were selected based on excellence in content, writing, editing, photography, art, graphics, design and concept or theme.
This year 1,351 printed magazines, newspapers and yearbooks and 182 digital publications of the current CSPA members were eligible to enter the Crown Awards. Of those entries, only these were awarded to magazines.
Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association to a student print or online medium for overall excellence.
A panel of Crown Judges assembles each year at Columbia University to view all entrants, whether they are newspaper, magazines, yearbooks or online media. Judges are experienced former advisers to student media, professional journalists who understand student media or professionals such as photographers or online specialists with particular expertise needed for the judging exercise.
They consider all aspects of value to the reader or viewer: content, design or presentation, coverage, photography as well as writing and editing.
