Student receives PMEA composing honor
An original orchestral composition by Winfield Bankard Carson V (Anthony Carson), a sophomore music student at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, is the winning musical composition of its type in the 2012 PMEA Composition Contest.
Carson is a resident of Canonsburg. His winning composition is Ispirazione di Sebastian Anthony Russo (English translation, Inspiration of Sebastian Anthony Russo), named for his late grandfather. It is to be showcased in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Outstanding Compositions session on Thursday, April 19, at the Lancaster (Pa.) Convention Center.
“It is a special honor to have this composition selected since we received nearly 40 entries in this year’s contest,” said Abi Young of the PMEA.
Carson said he has wanted to compose music since he began playing trombone in fourth grade. He later learned to play piano. His primary teacher in music composition before coming to Lincoln Park was Mike Karwowski, a Canonsburg area musician, composer and arranger. At Lincoln Park he has studied with composer-in-residence Todd Goodman, an award-winning composer.
A son of Kathy and Scott Carson, he plans to continue his education at a four-year music conservatory after high school and then find a career in composing for the film industry.
