MIDLAND, Pa. – “There she is…Teen Miss Pittsburgh 2010….” Fifteen-year-old Macy McBeth of New Castle, Pa., a sophomore musical theater major at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, was crowned Miss Teen Pittsburgh in its annual pageant on Sept. 19.
She has entered beauty pageants “ever since I was five months old,” an elated McBeth said, adjusting her rhinestone “Teen Miss Pittsburgh 2010” crown atop her curled red hair. As the winner she will perform community duties including visiting veteran hospitals and riding in Columbus Day and St. Patrick’s Day parades.
This is her third year at Lincoln Park, a 500-student performing arts charter school for grades 8-12. The school draws students from nearly 50 surrounding school districts.
McBeth is a triple threat as she loves to sing, dance and act. This past school year she appeared in Lincoln Park’s two big musicals, “Bye Bye Birdie” and “The King and I.” She hopes to make it to Broadway after high school and college, and said that participating in pageants has helped her confidence.
“Pageants bring out self-confidence. . . Practice, practice, practice” is what it takes to be a winner, she said. “It’s a struggle. It’s a want. You have to want to win.”
When she was six years old she won five trophies and was a grand winner with New Star Discovery. In 2008 and 2009 she was in the top 20 for National American Miss. She won Jr. Miss Glitz Pennsylvania for East Coast USA in 2008.
This year she was third runner-up overall for National American Miss, and in August won the title of Teen Miss New Castle 2010 for Win-A-Crown, the talent agency which also sponsors the Teen Miss Pittsburgh contest.
The final question of the Win-A-Crown Teen Miss Pittsburgh pageant was: “In your young life, what is biggest regret?” McBeth said she was self-conscious about her red hair in elementary school. “If I could have accepted myself more, I could have been happier then.”
Teen Miss Pittsburgh contestants were scored on fitness, fashion flair and an news interview. Finalists competed in swimsuit and formal wear categories.
When McBeth is not busy in a pageant or a musical she is performing with the New Castle Mini-Stars, a community performance troupe which has helped her learn song and dance routines.
While planning to compete in other teen pageant competitions in the Pittsburgh area, McBeth said her main focus will remain her musical theater career.
