MIDLAND, Pa. – The Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School student publication “pulp” is one of six literary art magazines in the country chosen as a winner of the Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association.
The NSPA previously selected the 2009 edition of “pulp” as one of 12 finalists for the Pacemaker Award. The finalists were selected from among 61 entries from across the country.
The 2008 edition of “pulp” was a Pacemaker finalist last year and also won the NSPA All-American Award, the association’s highest honor, in addition to several Pennsylvania state awards.
Student editors for the 2009 “pulp” were Margaret Burnside of Mount Jackson; Erin Hall of Freedom, Emma Jayne Stabbe of Baden, Natalie Averi Beaver Falls, Shae Tyler and Danette Hall of Aliquippa, Joshua Hulsizer of Beaver, Nick Bologna of Monaca, and Cara Wilks of Burgettstown.
Contributors and additional staff included: Kate Anker of Ambridge; Haley Burk and Rachel Zibaila of Beaver; Amber Christian and Callie Schmidt of Monaca; Jamie Clark of Crescent; Courtney Druzak and Taylor Sirko of Aliquippa; Kristen Faisant of Hickory; Audriana Joseph of Darlington; Maggie McCreary of Ellwood City; Jack Opal of West Middletown, and Josiah Bailey, Nate Sullivan, Laura Nahas, Fawn Rawl, D. Logan Thomas, David K. Wagner and Louis Ivan, all of Beaver Falls.
Scott Andrew is faculty media adviser for the magazine; Adam Atkinson is faculty literary adviser.
Entries were selected based on excellence in content, writing, editing, photography, art, graphics, design and concept or theme.
The National Scholastic Press Association evaluates 1,200 high school newspapers, magazines, and online publications annually as part of its mission to recognize the work of student journalists, improve the quality of student media and foster careers in media. A non-profit educational association based in Minnesota, NSPA provides journalism education services to students, teachers, media advisers and others throughout the United States and in other countries.
