Students and staff wrote letters and crafted cards to show appreciation for veterans.
MIDLAND, PA (Nov. 9, 2018) —Veteran’s Day is Nov. 11 and Lincoln Park students are honoring current troops and veterans by sending out roughly 500 letters and cards.
The “Letters to Vets” campaign was organized by the Friends of Rachel, or F.O.R., a new club that works to create a positive school climate for all students at Lincoln Park.
Club Advisor Kapeka Galazia, middle school counselor, said the letter-writing campaign was an optional project, but many students in grades 7-12 wanted to participate.
“I have a lot of students who were very willing and eager to show off their artistic abilities while recognizing service men and women for the sacrifices they made,” Galazia said.
Some veterans never receive a thank you or acknowledgement for their service, but students hope to change that.
“This is a project that was introduced last year by Kapeka and we are happy to see our students continue with it, with the support of several teachers,” said Principal Dr. Lindsay Rodgers.
Galazia has solicited help from Midland Elementary students, who have joined the Veterans Day writing campaign, as well.
Letters and cards will be mailed to local veterans, the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs, where there are 175 patients, and military bases in North Dakota and Moon Township, which plans to send them overseas. Some students will also hand deliver letters to parents and relatives who served.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_images_carousel images=”6785,6786,6787,6788,6789,6790″ img_size=”medium” autoplay=”yes”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
