A Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School student has been chosen for the 2017 Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences.
Luke Aloi, a junior literary arts and health science major, is one of 60 talented students to have been selected from a pool of 423 students across Pennsylvania to participate in the summer program renowned for its academic rigor.
The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, is an intense program designed to bring highly motivated and talented high school students together for a summer of academic and practical enrichment.
Aloi will spend five weeks on the CMU campus taking lecture courses in biology, chemistry, physics, math and computer science. Classes are taught by experienced, knowledgeable instructors from Carnegie Mellon, as well as faculty from neighboring institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, and Robert Morris University.
Aloi has the opportunity to participate in a laboratory course with access to state-of-the-art scientific equipment, to participate in several field trips, and be further enriched by an elective course and a distinguished guest lecture series. Each student is also required to complete a team project in one of the science disciplines offered during the program.
“Luke is exceptionally gifted,” said his chemistry teacher Caroline Dotterer, who encouraged him to apply.
Luke is president of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Club that Dotterer sponsors at Lincoln Park. She was also his teacher sponsor for the 2017 Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Heinz Field. Luke presented his research project in the senior medicine/health/microbiology category and was presented with a scholarship award.
He is also a member of Math Competition Club, Humanitarian Club, the National Honor Society, and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. He is a part of the Beaver Area Varsity Cross Country team and Western Beaver Varsity Track team. In college, he plans on majoring in either biochemistry, chemistry and biology, or chemistry and physics.
Luke is the son of Frank and Mara Aloi of Brighton Township.
