MIDLAND, Pa. — The Tony-award winning musical “Bye Bye Birdie” opens this weekend, May 14-16, on the mainstage at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland. The popular story of rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie’s publicity stunt before going into the Army features memorable songs like “Got a Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “How Lovely to Be a Woman,” and “Put on a Happy Face.” Forty students take the stage for hip-swinging fun in a bright array of period costumes designed by Kim Brown of Spotlight Costumes.
Director/choreographer Gavan Pamer says “Bye, Bye Birdie is a popular musical staged by high schools all across the country. The sets designed for Lincoln Park by Rob Ross evoke the feel of the late fifties.” The classic set for the song “Telephone Hour” is a must-see. “We used local craftsman to build the set and we plan to rent it out in the future to other schools” says Pamer, who also serves as artistic director for Lincoln Park. “Projects like these allow Lincoln Park to support area artists as well as provide the students with a great experience.”
Lincoln Park’s “Bye Bye Birdie” will run May 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $20, $15 and $12, and may be purchased in person or by phone at the Lincoln Park box office, 724.643.9004.
