Two students from Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School have the high honor of being selected to perform in the Music Educators National Conference All-Eastern Festival in Baltimore, Md., March 31-April 3.
”This is quite an accomplishment for Lincoln Park to have two students chosen for All-Eastern,” said Todd Goodman, who teaches music composition at Lincoln Park. “Our school has had only one musician selected five years ago, which was in our first year of operation. The process is highly competitive. Only the best and most accomplished reach this level.”
Goodman said both students are well on their way to professional careers in music.
Drew Percy, selected for violin, aspires to be a professional symphony musician. A junior from Butler, Pa., he is a son of Rodger and Lisa Percy.
Morgan Hopkins, a tenor who has her sights set on a career as an opera singer, was selected for All-Eastern Chorus. A senior, her parents are Karen and Arthur Hopkins of Pittsburgh.
Hopkins and Percy will rehearse with other outstanding high school musicians from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Florida and the District of Columbia. At the conclusion of the festival they will be directed in public performances by renowned conductors and choral directors.
Goodman said selection of Hopkins and Percy to the All-Eastern Music Festival was a competitive process that involved being chosen by audition for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-District Orchestra and Chorus, PMEA All-Regional Orchestra and Chorus, and finally for the PMEA All-State Orchestra and Chorus.
Percy said the selection process for All-Eastern did not include auditions because by the state level, students have proven themselves musically. Instead, the selection committee looked primarily at strength of experience as shown by their resumes.
